Whenever Gaming machines are being discussed, you rarely hear Chromebooks mentioned due to their rather lackluster performance capabilities.

Google did make Chrome OS a little appealing to gamers with the introduction of Android apps for Chrome OS, but most of the games in the Play Store aren’t really fully-fledged and do not stand a chance against their more established desktop counterpart.

Furthermore, game developers mostly design their games around hardware associated with smartphones, with little to no support for keyboard and mouse inputs. This, however, doesn’t imply that Android games can’t be played on Chromebooks as several models are outfitted with touchscreens.

The Nvidia Shield did prompt an influx of Android gaming devices thereby forcing developers to add more control mechanics to their games allowing Android games to run on a diverse list of hardware.

With the help of external accessories, Chromebooks users can enjoy the full experience of gaming from the comfort of their Chrome devices.

Although we might see future Chromebooks become game-centric devices with Google’s Project Stream service, it would take at least a few years before the service becomes mainstream.

But until then, here are some of the games you can enjoy on your Chromebook.

Injustice 2

If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat, then diving into the Injustice series should be a seamless transition. Both game franchises share identical mechanics and are developed by NetherRealm Studios.

Injustice 2 is the sequel to DC’s fighting game Injustice Gods Among Us and features a roster filled with characters from the DC universe.

The Android version of the game is a little bit condensed but does offer some interesting features like card collection and three onthree battles.

The game comes with a swipe-based control mechanic, meaning you will need a touch-based Chromebook to play.

Tekken

Having been around for decades now, Tekken can only be described as one of the most popular fighting games in history. Having made several generational releases on consoles and PC, the game has finally made its way to Android.

This Tekken is the handset version of the popular fighting game that allows you to enjoy all the action and excitement of the game from the comfort of your Android device.

And since it is on the Play Store, you can play it on Chromebooks well. This version of the game comes with 20 characters from the Tekken franchise that players can choose from.

Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter is a spin-off of the popular Fallout video game series and focuses mostly on building and resource management.

The game is a great extension of an already rich fallout universe and those familiar with the series will surely enjoy the game’s unique take on the series as they play as an overseer of a fallout vault.

In the game, players are tasked with guiding the citizen of the vault by looking after their basic amenities including power, food, and water.

Fallout Shelter is available on several platforms including Android and you can grab the game through the Play Store for your Chromebook free of charge.

Asphalt 8: Airborne

The Asphalt series is one of the most revered mobile racing games available and Asphalt 8: Airborne is one of the series most spectacular releases.

The game features a single-player racing mode with a variety of objectives and several multiplayer modes including both local and online versions.

One of the game’s remarkable features is its long list of vehicles that players can choose from – some can be won through races and events whilst others can be purchased without virtual and real currency.

Overkill 3

Overkill 3 is an action-packed third-person shooter that gets players trotting around the world to complete missions critical to the fate of humanity.

The cover-based shooter also caters for character and weapons customization allowing players to modify the appearance of the character they are controlling and the weapons they wield.

The game offers some of the best mobile-third-person mechanics as players can take cover behind obstacles, lean to fire their weapon or use crosshairs for unmatched aiming.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Rockstar Games have been munching in their success with Red Dead Redemption 2 but if you are looking to delve into their older titles, then you should take a look at Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

The Game is available for purchase through the Play Store which also means you can get play it on your Chromebook.

This re-release of the critically acclaimed game features some improvements that are tailored for improved gameplay and also include additions like high-resolution graphics as well as lighting enhancements.

The game does support select Bluetooth controllers or gamepads and also integrates with immersion tactile effects for an immersive gaming experience.

Arcane Legends

From the games listed, one might notice a certain degree of bias against hack and slash games. Admittedly, this is due to the fact that I find this genre of games to be a little too gritty for my taste but if you are someone into action RPG games centered around fantasy lore, then Arcane Legends is highly recommended.

This online MMORPG allows players to formulate their characters around three sets of classes Warrior, Rogue, or Mage and each class offers a unique skill set.

The gameplay is set through castles, forests, and dungeons and players –who are protectors of a kingdom called Arlor — battle dragons, orcs, all manner of evil creatures.

There are weekly events within the game that when completed, grants the player unique rewards that include items that can be used to customize your character.

It’s available as a standalone Android app but you are looking to game on a non touch-based Chrome device, you can install the game as an extension through the web store.

Funky Karts

Very few games are as addictive as Funky Karts. Could be the Mario-esque level design but one thing is for the certain, I can’t seem to stop playing this game.
Great for just passing the time on long train rides or just for killing boredom, Funky Karts has been an irreplaceable gem of a game.

Like most platformers, gameplay entails dodging prickly obstacle, smashing through annoying robots all through 64 amazing levels.

You can use coins collected to purchase karts and levels are graced with maps that help you unlock new in-game characters.

The game is available on the Play Store but if your Chromebook somehow doesn’t support installing apps directly through Google’s app store, you can grab the program as an extension for Chrome.

Gorescript classic

This game pays homage to the pioneers of first-person shooters and if you’ve played the first Doom, you immediately feel the nostalgia kicking in the moment you fire up the game.

Though there aren’t any over-the-top gore or hellish monsters like in Doom, yet, you still get the fast-paced ’90s-style gameplay and with its abstract 2.5D-voxels aesthetic, shooting at giant red floating balls with gaping mouths has never been so appealing.

Through non-linear levels, players battle enemies, scavenge ammo, find secrets all with non-regenerating health making playing Gorescript fun and challenging.

Sparta: War of Empires

One of the best strategy games available on the chrome web store Centered around Greek/ Persian wars, Sparta: Ware of Empires takes players through the journey of saving Greece from the relentless Persian army as they battle for the fate of the Greek civilization.

Build castles, create armies and earn rewards which can be used to improve your troops or build better fortifications. Progress through levels to unlock better troop variations and better buildings.
