Google Strives to Make Linux App installation Effortless in Chrome OS
Most people might find using Linux applications a bit of a challenge on the Chrome OS platform even though Linux supported apps gained compatibility with the Chrome system software since the previous year. Understandably, this is due to the fact that the current approach of installing Linux apps onto a Chrome OS system is beyond the scope of the typical end user as it requires a fair degree of familiarity with the Linux terminal.
Thankfully, however, that is about to be a thing of the past as Chrome OS users will soon be able to install Linux software sooner via the method they are already familiar with. That is from the app launcher like they currently can with Android and Chrome web apps.
As indicated from the bug tracker: “Add APT search into Chrome OS App Launcher, so that uninstalled Linux packages and Apps can be searched for and installed via the App launcher.” This is In regards to the commit on the open-source repo that facilitates the ability to search and have Linux packages installed directly from the Chrome OS launcher. This has not been in full effect on Chrome OS Canary yet, although the data structure will go by the name #crostini-app-search.
