Facebook seems to be on a path to redemption after the company’s not so fun three years. Blamed, for the most part, for its role in the 2016 election fiasco where its ad policies allowed foreign entities to spread misinformation among the electorates, Facebook found itself in yet another debacle in 2018 as the Cambridge Data scandal began to unfold.

But it wasn’t always like this for the social media company. Facebook’s story is reminiscent of big tech companies that littered silicon valley.

A couple of guys dropping out of school to chase a dream. A dream that in turn made them billionaires but one doesn’t get to the top without a few missteps and in Facebook’s case, it all accumulated between 2016 to 2018.

Despite the magnitude of the scandals, Facebook as a company continues to grow yet people’s trust towards the platform took a huge hit prompting some to look for alternatives.

Promptly deleting your Facebook account doesn’t delete your data including precious memories stamped on those photos you’ve uploaded on to the platform.

However, through its recent foray into the open-source realm, the social media company created a tool using an open-source Data Transfer Project that allows you to download your pictures from the platform straight to Google Photos.

Facebook is prioritizing security as far as user data is concerned adding security features like encryption of data during transfer ontop of prompting users to enter their passwords before any transfer session is initiated.

The tool is in the early stages of development and only limited to a selection of users with Google Photos the only supported platform, but the company hopes to expand it internationally with support for other services being planned.
